Greenbird wins place in Salzburg Innovation Challenge

Norwegian based technology company, Greenbird Integration Technology has been selected as a winner at Austrian Utility, Salzburg AG’s 2019 Innovation Challenge.

Innovation through Lean Startup Methods

300 startups initially pitched their innovative ideas to the team at Salzburg AG. Greenbird was one of six organizations who were chosen to continue to the second stage, the ‘Innovation Camp’.

This was an intense but rewarding three-day workshop. The startups and experts from Salzburg AG teamed up to develop ideas and solutions for a joint proof of concept using Lean Startup methods. The final concept went forward to the acceleration phase within a 3-day sprint.

Greenbird went on to win one of four coveted places in the next phase of the competition. During this part of the program, Salzburg team members will work with Greenbird to demonstrate how Greenbird’s platform approach will contribute to innovation and infrastructure improvements. In this ‘Acceleration’ phase, the startups will each receive a budget for a four-month proof of concept.

Greenbird’s CEO, Thorsten Heller, commented,

“This is a fantastic process to be involved in. It’s been great to work with a utility like Salzburg AG, who see the need for innovation and digital transformation in their industry. This challenge is a way for companies like Greenbird and established utilities to join forces and develop truly innovative and game changing solutions. We’re excited to have been chosen for the next phase of the challenge and can’t wait to get started.”

Innovation and Sustainability

There were two prerequisites for qualifying participants. Their technical solutions had to be innovative, but also the companies must be working towards sustainability and meet one of the United Nation’s sustainability goals.

The finalists will present their prototypes and proof of concepts in March. The winning project will receive the budget to implement their project.

This Innovation Challenge is a fantastic route for utilities and startups to bring their skill sets together and find innovative ideas to accelerate digital transformation in utilities.
