Smarthub joins Greenbird in EU’s Research and Innovation Program

Greenbird Integration Technology announced today that it has signed an agreement with Smarthub in Norway to develop it’s Utilihive Data Lake to illuminate “dark data” from smart metering for its members. The 10 utilities in the Smarthub alliance will benefit from a centralised source of unified energy data which will provide insights for operational improvements and saving as well as the possibility to offer new services for energy consumers.

The development project is part of a Horizon 2020 SME Instrument, Phase 2 project that Greenbird was awarded at the end of 2018.

Smarthub operates the systems that manage smart metering data for its alliance members through an automated data exchange to the network companies’ customer information systems and other utility applications. It brought in a new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system to operate the entire value chain including data collection, quality control, distribution and administration of target service, in accordance with AMS regulations. Smarthub is also responsible for providing the collected data to the Norwegian datahub, Elhub.

Since the agreement in 2016 to use Greenbird’s integration hub simplifying the interaction between the AMI, Elhub and the business applications at the 10 utilities in the alliance, Smarthub has been looking to generate more value from the data it has been collecting and processing for its members.

“We welcome the opportunity to further develop and implement Utilihive Data Lake to store all data managed through the platform so that our members will have access to large amounts of detailed data that come from the smart metering infrastructure and time-series data. It will enable our members to have real-time access to data driving operational improvements like predictive maintenance, outage management, self-healing grids, and advanced analytics. It also offers us the possibility to add our own applications on top of Utilihive which we can offer our clients that will offer insights and the foundation for substantial cost savings for the members.” explains Svein Ivar Morsund, Managing Director at Smarthub AS.

With Utilihive hybrid integration capabilities, Smarthub will be able to unify and structure both machine data and enterprise information and make it accessible to create new value. This will enable an utility to start building applications that create business insight with a lean startup approach.

“We value the continued partnership and cooperation we have with Smarthub. We strive to be the most innovative data provisioning company for utilities worldwide – and smart utilization of energy data is a key success factor. This is a positive step in that direction,” said Thorsten Heller, CEO at Greenbird.

The project was awarded April and we were able to deliver a pioneering phase during June. The solution is expected to be completed and deployed in October 2019.
