Norwegian Software Company helps to power Taiwan

Oslo and Taipei, 25 June 2019

Norwegian technology company, Greenbird Integration Technology, is taking part in a large-scale project that will implement and integrate smart metering IT infrastructure to support the roll-out of Smart Meters to initially 1.2 million homes across Taiwan.

Greenbird Joins Forces with Large Corporates

Greenbird specializes in out-of-the-box system integration for utilities and energy-related businesses. The Oslo-based software company will be working with a group of large corporate entities who are delivering the Smart Meter solutions on behalf of Taiwan Power Company (TPC).

TPC has selected software expertise from Siemens for its EnergyIP Meter Data Management System (MDM). Greenbird is providing its utility-domain specific digital integration hub Utilihive for data provisioning.

“This is a very exciting project for us,” said Thorsten Heller, Co-founder and CEO of Greenbird. “It marks a transition into a new and international market for Greenbird. It’s fantastic to see Utilihive successfully managing multiple integrations in such a large and multi-faceted project. We’re proud to be part of the team helping to deliver Smart Meter technology to millions of households across Taiwan.”

“Utilihive has added a competitive edge to our solution proposal”, expressed the members of the Taiwan Siemens Team. “Integration and information management is mission critical for both the client and the projects we are working together with. Greenbird and their disruptive integration technologies is really big for us.”

Data Integration is Key to The Project’s Success

The data integrations provided by Utilihive perform a vital role in this very complex project. Integrations with the MDM must be run for multiple head-end systems and multiple backend systems like billing or asset management. The head-end systems will be dealing with massive amounts of data. Multiple types of events and metering data with 15-minute resolution from the initial 1.2 million metering points will be generated when the project is completed. In addition, Utilihive is undertaking integrations both between the IT and Operational Technology (OT) and within the OT itself. This will improve and accelerate access to data for real-time events such as power outages.

The integrations between the meter head-end systems and operational analytics platforms are enabled by Greenbird’s Utilihive connectors and CIM-based APIs. This provides unified data to third-party vendors to connect power apps used by customers and installation crews. The integrations will have the effect of unifying metering operations.

A Speedy and Successful First Stage

TPC has now run a successful initial pilot of 200,000 metering points, paving the way for the next rollout of 1.2 million Smart Meters. A further Greenbird solution promises to ensure success of the next phase and take integration out of the critical path. The implementation of Utilihive Ghostwriter will provide scaled up simulations based on the data already collected from the first stage of the rollout. This will identify any potential issues and ensure that all business applications are running perfectly before further Smart Meter deployment. These simulations are invaluable in a project of this size, reducing risks, cutting costs and speeding up delivery times.

Greenbird is also providing further services for the project. Utilihive Data Lake is being used to archive data which has the potential for future data retrieval and historical analytics. Utilihive Heartbeat will provide end-to-end monitoring of the data flow, giving real-time information on events in the system, flagging up any errors or bottlenecks.

The Taiwan Siemens Team continued, “The new solution is not only a powerful platform for modern smart metering infrastructure deployments and management, it will also allow for growth as we deliver more metering services across Taiwan.”

One of the things that stands out about this project is the speed at which the first critical milestone has been reached. The initial pilot was delivered and approved in only five months, as opposed to the usual 24 months it would take to complete a project of this size. Not only has the pilot proved the scalability of this very large project, it indicates that millions of households in Taiwan will receive Smart Meter technology in record time.

“I am sure both TPC and our partners are thrilled to see how Utilihive is speeding up integration”, Thorsten Heller said. “Making enterprise integration that easy for utilities has always been our mission, here we have once again got the chance to prove it”.
